Databases Available to Everyone

Hazdat (Hazardous Substance Release/Health Effects Database)

PubMed The Entrez PubMed interface allows you to search for biomedical citations in MedLine, produced by the National Library of Medicine, or for molecular biology information on nucleotide sequences, protein sequences, macromolecular structures, or whole genomes from databases maintained by The National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI). Use the drop-down menu to select your database, then search by keyword. In PubMed, the MeSH Browser feature allows you to search by Medical Subject Headings. Use the Single Citation Matcher to quickly find a citation even if you have incomplete information; type in as much (or as little) information as you have all on one search screen, then do the search. Journal Browser lets you search for a specific journal; look here also to find links to publisher Web sites for over 600 journals (some provide free full-text of articles cited in PubMed). Use Clinical Queries if you want a very specific search for citations that deal with therapy, diagnosis, etiology, or prognosis.To combine searches, click on "History" beneath the search box; your searches are saved there for one hour.

TOXNET: Toxicology Data Network
Toxnet, a product of the National Library of Medicine, provides access to a series of databases containing toxicology data; studies, reports, and bibliographic information on toxicology; information about toxic releases, and chemical information that includes nomenclature, identification, and structure (structure searches require CHIME software).

CenterWatch : Clinical Trials Listing Service
Produced by CenterWatch, a division of the Medical Economics Company. The site includes listings for current clinical trials and National Institutes of Health studies, news and profiles of pharmaceutical industries (with links to company Web sites), and listings of recent FDA drug approvals.

ClinicalTrials.gov
ClinicalTrials.gov, developed by the National Library of Medicine for the National Institutes of Health, allows visitors to search or browse for information about ongoing clinical research studies. You can browse by disease or condition or by sponsoring agency, including the National Institutes of Health, Federal Agencies, Industry, or University/Organization. The Focused Search option allows you to request studies that include specific criteria, for example, studies on a particular disease or condition, in a specific location, or a particular trial phase. The site also features a variety of patient resources that explain about clinical trials, as well as links to consumer drug information.

Merck Manual of Diagnosis and Therapy
Full text of the 17th edition of the Merck Manual, edited by Mark H. Beers, M.D. and Robert Berkow, M.D., is available courtesy of Merck & Co., Inc. The Manual is searchable and includes hyperlinks to tables, figures, and relevant parts of other chapters.

HealthWeb: Pharmacy & Pharmacology
Vicki Killion, a health sciences librarian at Purdue University, has compiled the Pharmacy & Pharmacology subject area of HealthWeb. The site features links to a plethora of suggested Internet resources in categories that include Research, Reference, Education, and Pharmacy Practice.

RxList: The Internet Drug Index
Visitors to the RxList.com can search or browse for generic and tradename drugs and retrieve information drawn from the 1998 edition of Mosby's GenRx. Information retrieved includes indications, clinical pharmacology, adverse effects and warnings, references, and patient information.

International Bibliographic Information on Dietary Supplements (IBIDS) database
The IBIDS database, produced by the Office of Dietary Supplements (ODS) of the National Institutes of Health, includes references to "published, international, scientific literature on dietary supplements, including vitamins, minerals, and botanicals."

A Brief History of the Center for Drug Evaluation and Research
Gallery of Nostrums
This section, recently added to CDER's Web site, provides an historical overview of the Center and of the people and events that contributed to the establishment of the CDER as it is today. The exhibit features numerous black and white photographic images of individuals and laboratories associated with CDER since the late 1880s. Also included is an historical timeline of drug regulation in the U.S. from 1820, when the U.S. Pharmacopeia was established, up to 1997. The Gallery of Nostrums is an exhibit of nostrums (or patent medicines) such as snake oil, Mr. Bonker's Egyptian Oil, and Drs. Mixers' Cancer and Scrofula Syrup.

The site is also organized by intended audience; for example, the Information for Health Professionals Section includes sections on Clinical Trials and Human Subject Protection, and Drug Control, Scheduling, and Addiction Treatment.

Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition (CFSAN)
A division of the Food and Drug Administration, CFSAN has responsibility to oversee food safety, dietary supplements, and cosmetics in the U.S. Latest public health advisories and warnings regarding drugs, foods or cosmetics are posted at the site.

FDA News and Publications
Publications listed at the site include FDA Enforcement Report, FDA Backgrounder, FDA Consumer magazine, press releases, major speeches, and talk papers. Visitors to the site can browse or search back issues of these publications, or search for information at a specific FDA center.

Full-text state statutes and legislation on the Internet
